MAP grant funding increase expected to benefit an added 10,000 students

SPRINGFIELD — The state commission that oversees higher education grants for low-income students detailed the diminishing buying power of state financial aid Thursday during a budget request hearing.

Eric Zarnikow, executive director of the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, spent much of his testimony before a Senate appropriations committee breaking down the state’s Monetary Award Program grants, which apply to tuition and fees.

Appeals court again denies new trial for killer of McHenry County sheriff's deputy

It was different argument, same result this week for Scott Peters, the Holiday Hills man serving a 135-year prison term for shooting a pair of McHenry County sheriff's deputies, one fatally, in 2014.

Man from unincorporated Spring Grove charged with DUI after crashing into squad car

A 24-year-old man from unincorporated Spring Grove is facing multiple DUI charges after colliding head-on with a Lake County Sheriff's Office squad vehicle early Friday morning, according to the sheriff's office.

According to a news release from the sheriff's office, a Lake County deputy was traveling eastbound on Grass Lake Road in unincorporated Antioch at around 1:05 a.m. when a westbound vehicle driven by Carlos R.

 

Algonquin Township petition seeks to post township board meeting packets online

Algonquin Township electors filed a petition Tuesday to add an agenda item to the annual township meeting on April 14 regarding the publication of all meeting packets before board meetings.

The effort was led by Kathryn Potter, a Democratic precinct committeeperson for Algonquin Township, who said by allowing meeting attendees to view agenda information ahead of time, results will be nothing but positive.

Fire leaves Crystal Lake house uninhabitable

A house in Crystal Lake was left uninhabitable after a fire Thursday evening.

The Crystal Lake Fire Department was called to 1542 Candlewood Drive at 5:11 p.m, Fire Rescue Chief Paul DeRaedt said.

The first unit on the scene and police officers reported that there was smoke coming from the roof of the building, and fire crews confirmed that there was a fire in a second-floor bedroom.

The home was occupied at the time of the fire.

Wonder Lake man charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse

A Wonder Lake man was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and domestic battery, the sheriff's office announced on Thursday.

A concerned family member made a report with the sheriff's office on Monday, Feb.17, after which an investigation was initiated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.
