Polk falls from top perch as Florida's top citrus-producer

Polk County ended a 21-year streak as Florida's top citrus-producing county, a position it's held for much of the past seven decades. Polk growers produced just 12.5 million boxes of citrus in the 2015-16 season, according to a season summary released Monday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That ranked third behind 14.3 million boxes produced in Hendry County and 12.8 million boxes harvested in DeSoto County last season.

 

Pickup crashes into funeral home in Mulberry

A 1996 Dodge Ram whose driver suffered a medical incident crashed into the lobby of the Seigler Funeral Home, 1300 E. State Road 60 E., this afternoon, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Someone set fire to the mosque once attended by Omar Mateen, the man who opened fire at an Orlando nightclub in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, authorities said Monday. No one was injured.
