RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy has agreed to pay a $44,722 fine over hazardous waste storage violations on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. The fine was assessed Wednesday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in a consent agreement. It involves two incidents from 2013. In the first, the Energy Department moved 136 drums of hazardous waste to an unapproved area. In the second incident, DOE submitted a plan to close eight storage facilities that lacked information required under an earlier settlement.
