A new Colorado law signed Wednesday by Gov. Jared Polis bans the use of a cell phone while driving, except with a hands-free device or in emergency situations.
Violating the rule could result in fines. But amendments to Senate Bill 65 that were worked out by lawmakers downgraded it from a primary offense — meaning law enforcement will have to observe it in combination with another traffic violation to pull offending drivers over.
Still, Polis praised the bill before signing it.

It still wasn’t enough against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday afternoon.
With two outs in the ninth inning, the Reds hit two home runs, including a grand slam from second baseman Jonathan India, as Colorado lost, 12-7, and extended its losing streak to five games.
The Rockies were up 7-6 when pitcher Jalen Beeks was asked to secure the victory out of the bullpen.

Rockies left fielder Sean Bouchard exited Wednesday’s home matchup against the Cincinnati Reds due to a right ankle sprain.
“It didn’t look good,” Black said.
In the eighth inning, Bouchard tried to reach first base on a sacrifice fly but began limping as he crossed the bag. He was on the ground for a moment, as he was looked at by trainers before being helped off the diamond.
Bouchard was replaced by outfielder Brenton Doyle, who was immediately caught trying to steal second base.
This season, Bouchard has a .208 batting average with a home run, six RBI and three stolen bases in 24 games.
BUFFALO — One of the few certainties of this Colorado Avalanche offseason is Jonathan Drouin would like to continue playing for the team and the most important members of the club want him back.
