As a longer-than-expected offseason tips off for the Denver Nuggets, team officials want to be sure they separate from what coach Michael Malone calls “the emotional reaction to losing” before any major decisions are made.
“I think you always want to take time to let everything sink in and go back and take a quality look at everything that happened during the season,” general manager Calvin Booth said, “and then make decisions from that point.”
As those reflections begin, Booth, Malone and team president Josh Kroenke addressed several topics during a 34-minute news conference Thursday.
Listening to Gabe Landeskog talk about learning to walk again, it was impossible to run from the truth.
Landeskog would give his right knee to play for the Avalanche again. And Val Nichushkin was willing to risk everything in cratering the Avs’ postseason. Again.
The juxtaposition of the double-barreled themes at the Family Sports Center on Thursday morning was impossible to ignore.

Give the Rockies points for creativity. They find excruciating ways to lose ballgames, largely because of their spectacular imploding bullpen.
Thursday afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum, they turned a walk in the ballpark into a full-fledged soap opera. Ultimately, they lost 10-9 to the A’s in 11 innings.
A few sordid details:
• The Rockies led 4-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before giving up 10 runs to lose the ballgame.
• They scored four runs in the top of the 11th and appeared to have finally clinched the win.
The Cherry Creek School District settled a federal investigation into allegations that parents with limited English skills couldn’t fully participate in their children’s education because the district didn’t provide adequate translation, the U. S. Department of Justice announced Thursday.
The U. S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado received multiple complaints over the last three years that parents in the 52,000-student metro Denver district couldn’t take part in school programs and activities because Cherry Creek failed to provide “effective language assistance services,” according to an announcement of the settlement.
Federal investigators concluded Cherry Creek fell short in identifying parents who needed language assistance, did not provide them with adequate enrollment information and didn’t provide essential information in a language they could understand.
The 17-page settlement agreement, signed Wednesday, lays out detailed requirements for how the school district must translate essential information, from student handbooks to disciplinary documents, into parents’ preferred language.
More than 150 languages are spoken by parents of children in Cherry Creek schools, the Justice Department said.
“This agreement is intended to ensure that the Cherry Creek School District implements policies and practices to enable all parents in the district to participate meaningfully in their children’s education,” Colorado U.
The Broncos’ quarterback competition between rookie Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson was in full swing during organized team activities on Thursday.
This week, each quarterback has received their fair share of first-team reps, with Stidham getting those snaps on Tuesday and Wilson on Wednesday. On the final day of practice this week, Nix got his turn to run with the starters.
Overall, Nix had a solid day, as he was efficient and seemed to be in control of the offense.
