[...] I read with interest any beard-related news, especially items having to do with jurisprudence and beards. Considering how many beards there have been among our justices, historically, you might think there’d be more interest in protecting the beard from onerous regulations. The armed forces don’t like them at all, although professional sports teams have had to adapt to the times. [...] all that has changed. Just this week, the Supreme Court ruled that prison officials in Arkansas had violated the religious rights of Muslim prisoners by refusing to let them wear beards. Since Arkansas doesn’t require short hair, Justice Samuel Alito wrote, “it is hard to see why an inmate would seek to hide contraband in a half-inch beard rather than in the longer hair on his head.” [...] it was a useful televised reminder that not so long ago, a black Democrat was elected president by a slender but real majority. No economic calamities have occurred; the long, cold hand of government has not hurt the very people it was supposed to help, as predicted so often by the other party. If Congress really wants to “repeal Obamacare,” which has been its mantra for just ever so long, it’s going to have to do it without actually booting people out of insurance plans made possible by Obamacare. Not only that: I was gratified to get so many letters from so many Kaiser health care workers, all of them upset by the poor quality of mental health care at their institution. What is especially distressing to me about the substitution of classes for therapy is that the core of therapy is a warm and trusting human relationship. To me, it is as if instead of offering physical therapy, we put our members in front of a screen to watch a video of people exercising.
