More than 1.7 million children are homeschooled in the U.S., a number that has doubled since 1999. According to the National Center for Education Statistics at the U.S. Department of Education, in the 2011–12 school year, 91 percent of surveyed parents said that a concern about the environment of other schools was an important reason for homeschooling their child.
