Medical examiners used dental records to identify the burned body of the ex-cop blamed in the killings of four people, a San Bernardino County Sheriff's official said.

With a chase, a raging gun battle, and a blazing cabin fire, the hunt for suspect Christopher Dorner that has kept Southern California in terror for the past week may have come to an end on Tuesday.

Christopher Dorner was engaged in a shootout with federal authorities in the Big Bear area Tuesday, a law enforcement source told The Times. The shooting occurred after Dorner burglarized a home, tied up a couple and stole their car, the source said. It was not immediately clear whether Dorner was in custody.

The Police Department concluded Dorner was lying when he said his training officer kicked a man during an arrest.

A record $1 million reward was posted on Sunday for information leading to the capture of a fugitive former Los Angeles cop suspected of targeting police officers and their families in three killings committed in retaliation for his 2008 firing.
