Phil Harris. Wonga Philip Harris (June 24, 1904 – August 11, 1995) was an American actor, comedian, singer and songwriter. He was an orchestra leader and a pioneer in radio situation comedy, first with The Jack Benny Program, then in The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show in which he co-starred with his wife, singer-actress Alice Faye, for eight years.

Early Life and Career. Phil Harris was born in Linton, Indiana in 1904 but he claimed the South as his home because he grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. Phil was born Wonga Phillip Harris (Wonga means Swift Messenger in Cherokee) to Harry and Dollie Harris in Linton. When he was about eight-years-old, the family moved to Nashville permanently.
