Potomac River, river in the east central United States, rising in North and South branches in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia. The two branches (95 miles [150 km] and 130 miles long [209 km], respectively) flow generally northeast and unite southeast of Cumberland, Maryland, to continue.

Potomac River - American Rivers
After decades of decline, the Potomac River is on its way to recovery. The Potomac Conservancy has given the river increasingly higher marks since 2011, saying it’s the only major Chesapeake Bay tributary to achieve short- and long-term nutrient reductions in its headwaters.
