The liturgical calendars followed by some Christian churches emphasize several seasons of special observance. The rest of the year is, by definition, “ordinary time.” Whether or not we live by a liturgical calendar, the concept of ordinary time has merit as we examine our lives. Scripture offers many an illustration of the tendency in human nature, when the sought-for, prayed-for, wept-for relief from a crisis occurs, only for its beneficiaries to move quickly from gratitude to complacency, then boredom – then temptation and trespass. Just think of the Hebrews delivered from Egypt after more than four centuries as slaves.
