The Pentagon has successfully collected solar energy from space. Getty Images / Universal History Archive / Contributor The Pentagon has sent a solar panel into space to collect energy that could be sent back to Earth. The panel can collect much more energy than standard solar panels due to its proximity to the Sun. If adopted widely, the concept may provide solutions to climate change and natural disasters. It's an exciting time for technology and space exploration, with innovation happening faster than ever before and new milestones being reached.NASA's Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars recently, has recorded audio from Mars for the very first time and taken thousands of stunning images.Space exploration could also hold the answer to clean energy supplies for the Earth. For years, scientists have been investigating the possibility of harnessing solar energy from space and using it to power the Earth. It was once just a science fiction concept but now the Pentagon has successfully achieved it.The project was launched in May and involves a solar panel, known as Photovoltaic Radiofrequency Antenna Module (PRAM), attached to the Pentagon's unmanned X-37B drone.Solar panels in space are much closer to the Sun and are unaffected by factors such as darkness and clouds. They also retain solar energy in the form of blue waves as it doesn't pass through the atmosphere and so it is more powerful."We're getting a ton of extra sunlight in space just because of that," project co-developer Paul Jaffe told CNN, who reported the exclusive story. The drone is currently orbiting the earth every 90 minutes and although it hasn't sent energy back to the Earth yet, the technology was tested before the start of the mission."The unique advantage the solar power satellites have over any other source of power is this global transmissibility," Jaffe said.
