A tropical disturbance that formed Monday off the coast of Guyana and Suriname is expected to reach the western Caribbean late this week. The National Hurricane Center on Tuesday said that it will travel west along the coast of Venezuela, likely crossing the Southern Gulf of Mexico in the direction of Belize and Southern Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula. “Environmental conditions appear conducive for slow development once the wave reaches the western Caribbean late this week,” said forecasters. The system has a 20% chance of formation development in the next seven days. The western Gulf of Mexico generated the 2024 season’s first tropical storm last week.

But rip currents are the greatest danger and account for the most beach rescues every year. Six people drowned in rip currents over a recent two-day period in Florida, including a couple vacationing on Hutchinson Island from Pennsylvania with their six children and three young men on a Panhandle holiday from Alabama, officials say. CDK Global, a company that provides software used by many auto dealers in the U. S. and Canada, was hit by two cyberattacks last week that led to an outage that has affected day-to-day operations at car dealerships. On June 19, CDK spokesperson Lisa Finner said CDK is “actively investigating a cyber incident” and that the company shut down all of its systems out of an abundance of caution. For prospective buyers and current clients, this means slower service due to manual procedures at many dealers, with no end in sight. “Everything between service, parts, sales and even accounting are affected,” said Adam Giannettino, the Information Technology Manager at Pines Ford Lincoln in Pembroke Pines.

Perhaps that was the logic behind the billion-dollar state funding veto that recently decimated the South Florida cultural arts space. Less than 10 years ago, Florida ranked third in America for arts funding.

A police officer pulled him over and left him with a hefty $262 ticket, a sum the 18-year-old could not afford on his $12-per-hour call center salary. Soon Van Buren was subjected to a series of tasks: driving school, for which he also had to pay out of pocket, finding time in his work day to appear in court, and starting a payment plan, because he couldn’t pay the ticket in full and make rent at the same time.
