[...] it stars Sutton Foster, as you’ll see when it premieres on Tuesday, March 31. [...] it’s on TV Land, which has some fun, lightweight sitcoms, but isn’t giving the creators of “Modern Family” reason to lose sleep at night. Fourth, it’s about a 40-year-old divorced woman who is mistaken for 26, has multiple chances to set the record straight, but doesn’t want to imperil either her entry-level job at a major book publishing company or her new relationship with a hunky 26-year-old tattoo artist. In spite of all of these reservations, I couldn’t resist “Younger,” and I’m betting others will surrender willingly and in fits of giggles when it premieres. Liza knows as much about editing and publishing as any of her colleagues, but has to keep her knowledge under a bushel, since she’s supposed to be a relatively fresh out of college PA. Liza is doing well enough dodging Diana’s broadsides, temper tantrums and out-of-the-blue demands, but pretending to be younger than she is gets tougher when she begins a relationship with tattoo artist Josh (Nico Tortorella). First she has to get used to the fact that “commitment” for a 26-year-old doesn’t preclude occasional hookups with exes. Liza is also challenged by having to restrain her older and wiser maternal self, especially when Kelsey begins editing a Swedish superstar writer named Anton (Thorbjorn Harr), a blond, younger, non-chain-smoking version of Karl Ove Knausgaard. The whole idea of a character pretending to be someone they are not is hardly new, but Star justifies it here by prompting us to consider that Liza was victimized by her gambling, philandering ex-husband and that the job market isn’t very friendly to 40-year-old women who have been out of the workforce for 15 years. For one thing, “Younger” has no annoying voice-over narrative, but for another, when the characters do crack wise, it often seems accurate in context of who they are rather than some Hollywood writer trying too hard. With “Hot in Cleveland” heading for a grand finale at the end of its sixth season, “Younger” may just be a worthy successor as TV Land’s most popular original sitcom.
