Left tackle Joe Staley is an elite blindside protector who is one of two offensive linemen in 49ers’ history to reach five straight Pro Bowls. Wide receiver Torrey Smith is the 49ers’ lone deep threat and the only pass-catcher on the roster with a 1,000-yard season. Given that, there is good news for the college quarterback the 49ers are sure to draft with a high-round pick in 2017: A league source said the team is not attempting to trade Smith or Staley, despite reports to the contrary. On Monday, hours after head coach Chip Kelly termed a report the 49ers were shopping Staley “erroneous,” multiple national outlets reported Smith was on the trade market. Kelly presumably feels the same way about Smith, 27, who signed a five-year, $40 million deal last year and has since endured a forgettable 23-game stretch on a team that’s scored the fewest points in the NFL since his arrival. Smith, who never had fewer 49 catches in his first four seasons in Baltimore, has 46 catches for 864 yards and six touchdowns with the 49ers. [...] at least some of Smith’s dropoff is tied to subpar quarterback play. The games would go better for Smith, who had 65 catches for 1,128 yards in 2013, with an upgrade at quarterback.
