A southern California man allegedly hit his crying 7-year-old son and then threw him off on a tour boat in busy Newport Harbor, Orange County authorities said Tuesday.

Adrian McLemore, once a foster child himself, decided he couldn't let the same thing happen to his nephew and niece so he became an accidental father.

The woman started crying. I didn't expect this, because, well, why would I? We were two adults, standing in a preschool auditorium, waiting for the year-end musical gala to begin, talking summer plans and Twitter and junk fiction and all things mindless parents talk at mindless events.
