By Jennifer Palmer, Staff WriterTECUMSEH — For their project to replace a row of trees planted after the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, Tecumseh Middle School students are aiming for an A+. The symbolic trees, planted as a memorial after the devastating attack, inadvertently were cut down this fall during the installation of a new digital sign at the school, just south of State Highway 9 in Tecumseh. There was no marker for the trees, so the current school administration wasn’t aware of the significance, said Todd Trice, a teacher at the school and student council sponsor. “The kids here heard about it, and there was a move to replace the trees, and it kind of snowballed,” he said. Led by the school’s student council, the students have designed a beautiful new memorial for the front of the school — and they’re receiving support from architects Hans and Torrey Butzer, who designed the Oklahoma City National Memorial. Students designed the new memorial to include two trees — seedlings from the original Survivor Tree, one representing the past, one the future — with benches in between symbolizing the present.Read more on NewsOK.com
