VA pulls funding from work-study program at University of Houston Houston Chronicle Copyright 2012 Houston Chronicle. All rights reserved. Updated 09:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2012 The program, which allowed students enrolled under the GI Bill or vocational rehabilitation to work flexible hours in UH's Veterans Services Office for minimum wage, came under investigation in March after a UH employee contacted the VA to clarify procedures related to a student's timecard. "In this case, we had a situation where the certification of timecards was not in strict accordance with the established policy," said Jason McClellan, director of the Muskogee VA Regional Office in Oklahoma, which oversees the work-study program. The department does not track such work-study suspensions locally or nationally, but spokeswoman Jessica Jacobsen said the situation at UH "is the only instance, in Muskogee's jurisdiction, of which their office is aware." Eight student workers were affected by the loss of funding, but UH spokesman Richard Bonnin said the university has honored its commitment to those students by rehiring them.
