Out of 285 schools in Maine, just one has been tested for cancer-causing radon within the past five years as recommended by the federal government, according to a review by the state that it completed at the request of the Bangor Daily News. Between January 2015 and January 2020, only Mount Desert Elementary School in Northeast Harbor tested for the odorless, colorless, tasteless, radioactive gas, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer and can pose particular long-term risks for children.
