Ask most why they visit Big Sur, and you’ll hear about Esalen’s hot tubs or the Ambrosia Burger at Nepenthe, both sumptuous activities that come with a view of the big, beautiful Pacific. [...] ask someone really in the know, and you might hear about hermits just social enough to offer a few rustic rooms for those needing to trade a hectic outer life for a quiet inner one. The New Camaldoli Hermitage in Big Sur is three hours by car, but light-years away from the constant Internet buzz of the Bay Area. Not your typical vacation spot, Camaldoli is a working monastery under a vow of silence that extends to its guests. [...] for those quiet few who wonder what a ton of silence might do for (or to) a person, the short winter days (and low winter rates) are a perfect time to unleash your closet introvert. Winter rates start as low as $105/night, but that also includes meals, a deal as likely as an answered prayer in this pricey area. Gray whales are also migrating south down the coast until April, with the reverse commute starting soon. Mothers and calves headed back north swim closer to shore, farther from the great white sharks but closer to your binoculars. Unless you’re part of an organized retreat, these monks act like wildlife: they seem more scared of you than you are of them. Checking in: Since monks spend a lot more time looking internally than externally, prepare yourself for the simplest of accommodations. Other than an occasional creak of a floorboard or the whistle of my circa 1965 electric heater, I heard next to nothing. Each room comes complete with a vintage set of Boy Scout-style stacked tins, the kind that keeps the cold food cold and the hot food hot. Just like home, what’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner is whatever’s in the fridge, so special ordering is off the table. The food is mostly vegetarian and often comes from the monks’ own organic garden. Keep it simple, people: sunset on the Pacific. The towering redwoods have shredded most Internet connectivity, and the remainder has drowned in the Pacific. New Camaldoli Hermitage: 62475 Highway 1, just past the tiny town of Lucia.
