The Met Gala is the fashion event of the year—the place to see and be seen by the biggest celebrities in Hollywood. Walking that red carpet is as good a signifier as any that a person qualifies as a celebrity. While the world usually has its eyes peeled to see what the biggest names like Rihanna, Zendaya, and Kylie Jenner will wear to walk the red carpet, it’s worth paying special attention to those making their Met Gala debuts, the statements they’re looking to make, and the stories their looks tell to everyone watching.

This year, a number of people are walking the carpet for the first time on the first Monday in May.
On Monday night, the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art were filled with celebrities, fashion insiders, and art lovers, who all donned spectacular looks for the 2024 Met Gala. The buzzy annual event, which takes place every year on the first Monday in May, has long been heralded as fashion’s biggest night and this year’s red carpet definitely made the case for this distinction.
When it comes to making a dramatic, memorable fashion statement, few do it like Zendaya. The long-simmering beef between Kendrick Lamar and Drake has exploded in recent days as the rappers repeatedly lobbed insults and allegations about one another’s families and personal lives in a series of escalating diss tracks that has also invoked other hip-hop greats, including Metro Boomin and DJ Mustard.
The feud, in which each rapper has made numerous unverified allegations, prompted Drake to respond in a song on Sunday that he’s “disgusted” by Lamar’s claims about him, including that he has a secret child and engages in sex with underage girls, which he denies.

In “The Heart Part 6”—a title that references Lamar’s “The Heart” song series—Drake said he would have “been arrested” were there any truth to the allegations about him having inappropriate relationships with underage girls.
