When Bay Area journalist Sarah Shourd was held in solitary confinement for 410 days in Iran, she used various coping mechanisms: reciting her multiplication tables over and over, punching her cell’s wall until her hands bled, trying to communicate with the other female captives in her political prison, and eventually adhering to a rigorous schedule of practicing foreign languages, inventing stories and holding imaginary talks with family members. Featuring nine actors and directed by Michael John Garcés, the production is based on Shourd’s own experience and 75 interviews she conducted with prison officials, imprisonment experts and other survivors and their family members. The show is an indictment of overuse of solitary confinement in the United States, where 100,000 people endure that cruel and unusual punishment daily.
