Is ‘Cul de Sac’ creator Richard Thompson the last, best hope for the American comics page?

Bill Watterson receives reporters about as often as Charlie Brown receives a Valentine. Long viewed as the J.D. Salinger of comics, the creator of the retired and still-beloved strip “Calvin and Hobbes” guards his privacy by rebuffing most every entreaty for an interview. Now, however, comes a question about a certain “kid strip” cartoonist.
