In the 2014-15 school year, SUNY partnered with a federal loan servicer and recruited 17 campuses to try something new. After a student loan borrower dropped out, they messaged that person a lifeline: "Come back and avoid default. We'll be here to help you re-enroll." The results were so successful — one in five borrowers returned to college — that SUNY is now seeking to expand the program across all 64 of its campuses.
