In the offseason, the 49ers promoted quarterbacks coach Geep Chryst to offensive coordinator, a role he hadn’t assumed since a two-season stint with the Chargers ended 15 years ago. In turn, they filled Chryst’s former spot with Steve Logan, who had been out of football for three seasons after his only NFL job — a three-year stint as the Buccaneers running backs coach — ended in 2011. Chryst acknowledged the 49ers scaled back the playbook to suit quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s strengths; Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu said the 49ers’ “simplified” passing game made it easy to anticipate routes after Arizona had four interceptions in a 47-7 win; and head coach Jim Tomsula said the 49ers weren’t a drop-back passing team but were “built more with” their tight ends, only one of whom has more than 18 career receptions. Against the Cardinals, Kaepernick attempted just 15 passes after two of his first four attempts were returned for touchdowns. [...] Chryst has said the blowout nature of the first two games — a 20-3 win over the Vikings and a 43-18 loss to the Steelers — meant the 49ers didn’t unveil their entire game plan. Despite two blowout losses, Hyde ranks fourth in the NFL in rushing attempts (54) and the 49ers‘ tight ends have played 417 snaps this season, 15 more than their wide receivers. [...] backup tight end Garrett Celek (133 snaps) has played more than Smith (125), who signed a five-year, $40 million deal in March and has been held to under 12 receiving yards in two of the first three games. If the 49ers can establish the run, it could allow them to play keep-away from Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the 2014 NFL MVP who leads the league in passer rating (135.4). The Packers rank 27th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed (127.7) and Kaepernick has averaged 100.3 rushing yards in his three career starts against Green Bay. [...] Kaepernick will also need to make plays with his arm on the heels of a career-worst performance that included 67 passing yards and a 16.7 rating. [...] you play that first quarter against Green Bay,” he said, “that’s your most recent mark and it’s concerning. The defense has jumped offside eight times against the Packers this season, and Rodgers has completed five passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns on those plays, which have also produced a 52-yard pass-interference penalty. Rodgers has a 145.0 passer rating when targeting WR Randall Cobb (20 of 26, 245 yards, 4 TD), according to Pro Football Focus.
