Autism is a developmental disorder that affects the ability to communicate and form relationships with others. Every person is different and may have different symptoms. It is common for people with this disorder to not make eye contact, avoid being touched, repeat movements, or insist on the same routine. Some kids are very active; some are very quiet. They may have trouble learning to dress themselves or use a spoon and fork. Doctors learn about how a child acts to decide if he/she has autism. There are no medical tests, but doctors may do tests to make sure there are no other health problems.
