Adair County was formed in 1851 and named for John Adair, a general in the War of 1812. It is in the southwestern part of the state and is bounded by Guthrie, Madison, Union, Adams, and Cass counties. The present land area is 570 square miles, and the population in 2000 was 8243. The county seat is Greenfield.
