Former A’s outfielder Seth Smith cracked a solo homer off rookie reliever Ryan Dull in the eighth to give the Mariners a 3-2 victory and prevent an A’s sweep. The team lost 35 one-run games, an Oakland record. The A’s scored two runs in the third off Vidal Nuno; Craig Gentry led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Bryan Anderson, and Rule-5 player Mark Canha belted his 16th homer of the season, putting a bow on an excellent rookie season. The Mariners got a sacrifice fly from Logan Morrison in the fourth and an RBI groundout by Jesus Sucre in the sixth, tying the game, but A’s starter Chris Bassitt did a fine job of limiting the damage in each inning. Bassitt went six innings and allowed five hits and five walks along with the two runs, and he struck out three. MVP watch: manager Bob Melvin is keeping a close eye on the American League MVP race, where former A’s third baseman Josh Donaldson finished in essentially a dead heat with Angels outfielder Mike Trout.
