Facebook on Saturday activated its Safety Check tool, letting users who live in areas affected by the Nepal earthquake report they are safe to family and friends. “When disasters happen, people need to know their loved ones are safe,” wrote Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his Facebook page. In October, the Menlo Park social networking company launched Safety Check, a tool created based on the response on Facebook from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. More than 2,500 deaths have been reported since Saturday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake, according to the Associated Press.
