Album review: Haydn Classical The new release by Nicholas McGegan and the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra finds them at their most buoyant and rhythmically exuberant — even for these perennially buoyant and exuberant artists. The vehicle is three symphonies from Haydn’s middle period, and the performances, recorded in Berkeley during two concert runs last year, bring out both the vitality and endless creativity of the composer’s writing. [...] they’re every bit as inventive as the better-known works, full of witty formal surprises and melodic charm, and McGegan and the orchestra dispatch them all with grace and flair.
