The text is drawn from Rilke’s long poem “The Lay of the Love and Death of Cornet Christopher Rilke,” about an ardent young 17th century soldier, and the music boasts a distinctive blend of Romantic effusion and steely, almost austere contemporaneity. Some of Bielawa’s text-setting — the equestrian tone-painting of the opening “Riding,” or the turbulent song “Storm in the House” — brings Schubert right to mind, and the superbly sonorous performance by baritone Jesse Blumberg and pianist Jocelyn Dueck places it right in that tradition. [...] interspersed among the songs are intricate violin meditations, brilliantly rendered by Colin Jacobsen, that cast an appraising eye on what’s come before. The two other pieces on the disc are equally potent: the hypnotic “Wait” for piano, violin and voice, and an urgent, inventive setting of Boris Pasternak’s poem “Hurry, My Verses.” —
