"Arrow" producers Berlanti Productions and Warner Brothers Studios are teaming for "Riverdale," a one-hour drama based on the iconic "Archie" comic book series. Set in the present in the small fictional town of Riverdale, New York, the story deals with the eternal love triangle of Archie Andrews, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich socialite Veronica Lodge. Rival Reggie Mantle, slacker best friend Jughead Jones and popular gay character Kevin Keller will all play key roles in the series which will also include characters from other titles in the Archie Comics library like "Josie and the Pussycats". The project is described as a "bold, subversive take" on the comic which explores the "surrealistic twists of small-town life plus the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade." The project is being penned by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the Archie Comics CCO who also penned the "Carrie" and "Town That Dreaded Sundown" remakes, the Broadway-bound musical adaptation of "American Psycho," and spent several years working as a writer on "Glee". Aguirre-Sacasa has familiarity with shaking up wholesome comic titles, penning two of the publisher's best-selling titles - "Afterlife with Archie" which depicts a zombie apocalypse hitting Riverdale, and "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" which is a dark reimagining of "Sabrina the Teenage Witch".
