MECHANIC FALLS – Officials in Auburn say they used a drone to help rescue two boys stranded on a rock in a raging Androscoggin River. Auburn Fire Chief Frank Roma told WGME that rescuers wanted to get a life jacket out to one boy who wasn’t wearing a life jacket before attempting the rescue Tuesday. Roma said they used a drone to get a line to the boys so they could pull the life jacket to the rock they became stranded on after their tube overturned. With both boys safely in life jackets, two rescuers paddled out to them and rescued the younger boy first, then came back for the teenage boy. The water was so rough that one rescuer was thrown from the raft. Both boys were uninjured.
