“Bertha,” the massive tunnel boring machine, has remained stuck and damaged for more than 13 months. When it arrived in July of 2013, Bertha was supposed to spend 14 months drilling a two-mile tunnel to replace the 60-year-old Alaskan Way Viaduct. A bill in the Legislature to stop all spending on Seattle’s “big dig”, and repair of the Bertha tunnel boring machine, has died less than a day after it was introduced.
