Bowdoin College Hires New Head Football Coach

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin College has filled its head football coaching position with the hiring of William “B.J.” Hammer II. Hammer, who most recently was the head coach at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, becomes the 30th coach in Polar Bears program history. He replaces J.B. Wells, who led Bowdoin to a 3-31 record over five seasons. At Allegheny, Hammer took over a program that was 1-29 in the three years prior to his arrival.

    AUBURN, Maine — The group entering Side by Each, a new brewery in Auburn, belied the deep knowledge of the craft beer scene typically attributed to millennials. The 15 people from The Highlands Retirement Community in Topsham turned out not to be novices, but seasoned beer tasters on the craft brewery trail in Maine. Not the typical tasting enthusiasts, they range in age from 72 to 93. During the past two years they have made 17 trips to 34 breweries, and accumulated a lot of beer knowledge along the way. More
  • UMaine football drafts rosters for annual Jeff Cole memorial game
    The University of Maine football team has been divided up via a draft, and the structure has been set for Saturday’s 15th annual Jeff Cole Memorial Spring Game. The game, which begins at noon Saturday at Alfond Stadium in Orono, is named after the late UMaine football assistant coach who died of cancer in 2004. For the first time in several years, it will be an actual Blue-White game instead of a scrimmage between the offense and the defense.   • Mount Desert Island basketball standout to play for St. Joseph’s
    Another eastern Maine boys basketball standout is headed to the NCAA Division III collegiate ranks. Andrew Shea of Mount Desert Island High School in Bar Harbor, a 6-foot-3-inch guard, will attend Saint Joseph’s College in Standish this fall. Shea was a captain for the Trojans during the 2018-2019 and averaged 11.7 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.5 steals to help coach Justin Norwood’s club finish third in the Class B North Heal Points at 13-5.
