'A Breath of Life,' by Clarice Lispector Structured as a dialogue between an author and his character, a woman named Angela, the novel explores what it means to exist and to create. Long held in high esteem in Brazil, the Ukrainian-born Jewish author experienced an international literary resurrection following the publication of Benjamin Moser's "Why This World: A Biography of Clarice Lispector" in 2009. Lispector's friend Olga Borelli, who was responsible for organizing and publishing the book, writes in her brief introduction that this book, "so difficult to produce, was, in the words of Lispector 'written in agony' for it was born of a painful impulse she was unable to contain." Lispector wrote "A Breath of Life" as she lay dying of ovarian cancer, and one senses that the act of writing drained the author of her own "sources of energy," perhaps even hastening her death. Lispector's characters lead tortured lives, hovering in the space between, searching for ways to fill the aching void of their existence. [...] people were helping me in the middle of the traffic to gather my secrets. Because my purse had opened and been disemboweled: its entrails and my trampled prayers scattered across the ground. Reading it, one often feels as though one has come across this enigmatic author's deepest secrets, as if the dazzling syllables on the pages of this book are the dying Lispector's own entrails and trampled prayers.
