Brewers claim ex-A’s catcher Stephen Vogt on waivers CHICAGO - Stephen Vogt was claimed off waivers by the Brewers on Sunday morning, putting the two-time All-Star right into the middle of a National League pennant race. The Brewers were the only team to put in a waiver claim for Vogt, and typically players only are placed on waivers once trade attempts prove unfruitful. By claiming Vogt, the Brewers are responsible for the remainder of his $2.965 million salary. The A’s designated the popular team leader and fan favorite Thursday when Bruce Maxwell was called up from Triple-A Nashville. Vogt was batting .217 with four homers and 20 RBIs; opposing baserunners had stolen 25 consecutive bases against him. Brewers manager Craig Counsell is close friends with A’s manager Bob Melvin and, like Vogt, one of Melvin’s favorite former players. Susan Slusser is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer. Ryon Healy’s eight homers in June are his most for a month and the most in June by an A’s player since Ben Grieve hit eight in 2000.
