Business News Roundup, June 30

More Americans signed contracts to purchase homes in May, as pending sales climbed to their highest level in more than nine years. The National Association of Realtors said Monday that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index rose 0.9 percent to 112.6 last month. Steady job growth coupled with low but rising mortgage rates has created greater urgency to buy homes. The gains reflect both a stronger economy but also the pressures to purchase a home before both prices and the cost of borrowing become potentially unaffordable. Completed sales of existing homes jumped 5.1 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.35 million, the Realtors said last week. The number of signed contracts increased in the higher-priced Northeast and West markets last month, while dipping in the Midwest and South. New York has formalized its ban on high-volume hydraulic fracturing for natural gas after a seven-year environmental and health review. Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens announced the decision Monday, saying a ban was the “only reasonable alternative” after “years of exhaustive research and examination of the science and facts.” New York is the only state with significant natural gas resources to ban fracking, which has allowed other states to tap huge volumes of gas trapped in shale formations deep underground. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is telling the owners of 65 new 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos to immediately stop driving the vehicles and is recalling a total of 7,690 SUVs. The automaker said it is taking the unusual step of telling owners to stop driving the vehicles because suspension components were installed that were not correctly treated by a supplier for high temperatures. The federal agency that oversees railroads has asked digital mapping companies to alert drivers as they approach track crossings in the hope that visual and audio cues will lead to greater awareness of potential dangers. [...] Google has agreed to update its maps with crossing locations, the Federal Railroad Administration announced Monday. LendingClub Corp.
