Cal A.d. Williams Stepping Down

Mike Williams informed the chancellor Tuesday that he will not pursue an extension when his contract as Cal’s athletic director ends in May, according to the university. Williams, who has been in the post since 2015, has tried to steer the athletic department through a tumultuous time - its current financial plight and the hiring new head coaches in football, men’s basketball and baseball during a six-month span. The department, which lost about $22 million last year and is saddled with more than $400 million in debt, is aiming to reduce its overall deficit by $4.65 million this fiscal year, according to budget plans for 2017-18. The university is considering relocating the track and soccer programs to allow the campus to construct residential housing at Edwards Stadium, seeking a naming sponsor for Memorial Stadium and selling alcohol at football and basketball games as “strategies” for long-term revenue. According to the most recent Academic Progress Rates (2015-16), 14 of 25 measured sports teams posted a 1,000 - the highest possible.
