Matt Anderson takes lead in kicker competition A quick look at the Cal football team’s Friday practice. Duration: 19 periods: two-minute; six three-minute; six four-minute; two five-minute; two non-timed Shoulder pads, helmet Offensive lineman Aaron Cochran (illness) and linebacker Aisea Tongilava (toe) were sidelined today. Head coach Sonny Dykes said that Tongilava’s injury was not football related, and it has yet to be assessed. Safety Griffin Piatt (knee), cornerback Jaylinn Hawkins (shoulder), safety Quentin Tartabull (knee) and defensive end Trevor Howard (knee) continue to be limited. Dykes said that, if the season opener was today, sophomore Matt Anderson would be Cal’s starting kicker. The Danville native, who converted a 44-yard field goal today, has been trading reps with junior Noah Beito all preseason. Dykes confirmed that freshman Kanawai Noa, who is the team’s first-team punt returner on the latest depth chart, will play this season. Brandon Singleton, another freshman wide receiver who has impressed coaches in recent weeks, remains a possibility to play as well. Cal has spent considerable time focusing on procedural aspects in hopes that it can play faster come game days. The defensive backs recorded three picks in rapid succession, including one nifty play when sophomore safety Derron Brown darted into open space to snag a David Maaghul pass up the middle. [...] we’ve just got to be able to execute and make sure we’re blocking the right people and doing the right things.
