Cape Cod Communities Discuss Growing Shark Danger

WELLFLEET, Mass. — With the number of sharks prowling the waters off Cape Cod expected to increase, local communities and agencies are taking a proactive approach to prevent tragedy. A working group tasked with improving public safety in light of increased shark sightings met Tuesday night in Wellfleet to discuss ideas. The Cape Cod Times reports that Leslie Reynolds, chief ranger for the Cape Cod National Seashore, said the aim is to change human behavior and keep people closer to shore. Her staff is working on a sign that would clearly spell out the shark danger to offseason beachgoers. State shark expert Greg Skomal said the number of great whites coming to the Cape each year “continues to go up and it will continue to do so in the near future.”
