Castro brothers predict Texas will become Democrat dominated state soon Express-News Copyright 2013 Express-News. All rights reserved. Updated 2:11 pm, Sunday, January 20, 2013 The twin brothers predicted to a national TV audience Sunday that Republicans will lose their iron grip on Texas, and that within two presidential election cycles, the currently “red” state will shift from a GOP stronghold to being dominated by Democrats. Julián Castro is often mentioned as a potential Democratic gubernatorial candidate, although he has ruled out 2014, and Joaquín Castro is seen by many Democrats as a future Senate candidate. After their Sunday TV appearance, Julián Castro spoke to Democrats with the Lone Star Project, a political action committee that works to elect Democratic congressional candidates. Both said that Obama and Congress should tackle gun control, in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., shootings that left 20 children and seven adults dead, as well as immigration reform, in the wake of a presidential election that saw 71 percent of Latinos vote for Obama. A freshman lawmaker, Joaquín Castro said Democrats and Republicans must work together to overcome differences and reach consensus and compromise to address the fiscal issues.
