BARBERTON: At the turn of the last century, immigrants started pouring into Barberton to help fill half a dozen brand-new factories. Cornfields gave way to a bustling community, and ethnic organizations quickly set up shop to help the foreigners succeed in their new homeland. The city hasn’t been a magnet for immigrants in decades, and yet six clubs with Eastern European roots have made it to the 21st century. The Hungarian Club, the Liedertafel and the GBU (both German), the Sokol Club and Jednota Club (both Slovakian) and the Slovene Center (Slovenian) are still on or near the spots where they first took root.Just don’t look too hard for the ethnic connection. The Hunky Club — as its 1,500 members lovingly call it — serves up an annual Hungarian feast once a year because, well, they had the recipes, so why not?Otherwise, it’s a sports bar with a full-service kitchen, alternating between a mellow afternoon hangout and a bustling cheap-wings night.Gone are the days of cultural singing and dancing groups.
