The statistic, reported a year ago by the Beacon Journal, shocked the conscience of Debbie Rhinesmith.Every 12 days, a student is hit by a vehicle while walking to or from school somewhere in Akron. More troubling, she thought, was that students in Akron and Ohio’s largest cities are hit 3.3 times more often than their suburban peers, who often benefit from safety training — known as Safety Town — that is absent from the city.
