A co-defendant facing murder charges with former mob boss Frank Salemme for the 1993 strangulation of a would-be snitch wants to muzzle prosecutors as they present the case against him, according to court filings.Paul M. Weadick’s past association with organized crime figures, as well as his alleged roles within La Cosa Nostra, are not relevant, his lawyers William Crowe and Mark Shea wrote.

Evans is asking local college students to be on their best behavior for Monday’s marathon — a day when some say they plan to party responsibly, which others say they find a hassle.In an open letter to students yesterday, Evans said the “significant presence” of both uniformed and plainclothes police along the 26.2-mile route will not tolerate public drinking or congregating on rooftops, fire escapes or porches.

 

Cops make arrest in fatal stabbing near Garden

The man allegedly responsible for carrying out a deadly stabbing on a busy downtown street Monday night as crowds of concertgoers walked by has been arrested, police said.Mark Love, 55, of Boston was arrested yesterday and is expected to be arraigned on a murder charge today in Boston Municipal Court, police said. Hub police continue to investigate what led to the stabbing Monday night.

 

Boston fire truck’s tower collapses in Mattapan

A Boston fire department tower truck suffered a "major structural failure" while responding to a two-alarm fire in Mattapan Wednesday night, fire officials said. Tower 10 based in Jamaica Plain was lifting a firefighter to the roof of a Duke Street triple decker when, for reasons still under investigation, the tower gave way."I would say it's a major structural failure of the truck," said Boston Fire Department Commissioner Joseph Finn. "Its too early to say what it is, but certainly the truck failed."

Massachusetts Senate OKs bill aimed at student loan lenders

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Senate has passed a bill supporters are calling a student loan bill of rights.The bill —approved unanimously by the Senate on Wednesday — aims to will help protect students from unfair, predatory, and deceptive practices from student lending and loan servicing companies.The bill would require a new licensing regime for student loan companies and build on Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey's efforts to create a student loan ombudsman to be a one-stop shop to handle complaints of student loan abuse.

 

State sends out private information in faulty mailing

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Department of Revenue has announced it sent out the personal information of thousands of people who pay child support to private businesses.
The Boston Globe reports that private data from approximately 6,100 people who owe child support were sent to the wrong addresses.
