Supreme Court deals big setback to labor unions

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that government workers can't be forced to contribute to labor unions that represent them in collective bargaining, dealing a serious financial blow to Democratic-leaning organized labor.The court's conservative majority, re-empowered by Justice Neil Gorsuch, scrapped a 41-year-old decision that had allowed states to require that public employees pay some fees to unions that represent them, even if the workers choose not to join.

A 20-year-old Harper Woods man has been charged with multiple counts of breaking and entering and fleeing police after stealing safes full of prescription narcotics from a Eastpointe Walgreens Pharmacy, police say.Larry Baker III, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering, receiving and concealing stolen property and a stolen vehicle, and fleeing a police officer -- third degree, Wednesday by Judge Carl Gerds III at 38th District Court in Eastpointe.

Local reaction was mixed to Wednesday's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that government workers can't be forced to contribute to labor unions that represent them in collective bargaining.According to The Associated Press, the decision could free more than 5 million non-union workers in nearly two dozen states from any financial ties to unions and could encourage members to stop paying dues for services and benefits they can get for free.

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump made a startling last-minute pitch Wednesday for a far-reaching Republican immigration bill that remained on track for defeat, just days after telling House lawmakers to stop wasting time on the effort until after the November elections.In his latest instance of whiplash on the issue, Trump tweeted Wednesday: "HOUSE REPUBLICANS SHOULD PASS THE STRONG BUT FAIR IMMIGRATION BILL, KNOWN AS GOODLATTE II, IN THEIR AFTERNOON VOTE TODAY, EVEN THOUGH THE DEMS WON'T LET IT PASS IN THE SENATE.
