Staples settles consumer suit: $968,000

Staples settles consumer suit: $968,000 Office supply retailer Staples has agreed to pay nearly $1 million to settle a suit filed by district attorneys in four Bay Area counties saying its checkout scanners regularly charged customers more than the price listed on shelves or in ads. Inspectors in Sonoma, Contra Costa, Marin and Napa counties, along with state examiners, found that the cash register prices at Staples stores often exceeded the lowest posted or advertised price, in violation of state law, Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch said Wednesday. "California law requires businesses to implement and maintain systems to ensure that their customers are charged the correct price," the district attorney said in a statement.
