‘Bound for Freedom’s Light: African Americans and the Civil War’

It’s easy to believe that when Abraham Lincoln drafted his second inaugural address in 1865, writing that if God willed it, the struggle against slavery would continue until “every drop of blood drawn with the lash shall be paid by another drawn with the sword,” that he had in mind a famous photograph made two years earlier.
