'Is This Tomorrow,' by Caroline Leavitt

'Is This Tomorrow,' by Caroline Leavitt Though looking for a fresh start - her own slice of the American dream - Ava finds herself ostracized by the majority of her new neighbors, a judgmental and anti-Semitic lot who disapprove of beautiful and outgoing Ava pretty much on sight. There will be no plot spoilers here, but Leavitt does a masterful job of building suspense as the terrifying story of what happened to Jimmy is slowly and skillfully revealed. Here, the disappearance of Jimmy serves almost as a metaphor for the Cold War angst and suspicion gripping the country at the time, and perhaps the most magical aspect of Leavitt's wonderful novel is that her narrative works as almost a parable for that complicated and uncertain era, teaching and warning her readers even as she entertains them.
