Comment on Augusta police suspect familiar scam artist, thief in latest incidents

Police were searching this morning for a known trickster with a history of arrests who is suspected of snatching money from a woman’s vehicle on Broad Street Wednesday. Since 2010, Eva Carol Smith, 47, has been charged with theft by deception at least seven times among other charges. In most cases, Smith receives 12 months probation and a fine, but in two of the cases she was sentenced to four months confinement. She’s a familiar face and name to police working downtown Augusta and her crimes usually follow a similar pattern. read more
